5 Foods Should Be Avoided During Pregnancy

Below are some types of food that should be avoided during pregnancy due to the severe risk of causing health problems:

1. Raw meat

Raw or undercooked meat can contain the Toxoplasma parasite, which is dangerous for pregnant women because it can cause infection in the fetus, even if the pregnant woman does not experience any symptoms.

Therefore, if pregnant women want to eat meat, including minced meat and sausages, ensure the meat is thoroughly cooked.

2. Raw eggs

Consuming raw eggs and foods containing raw eggs risk exposure to Salmonella bacteria.

Although it does not directly impact the fetus, Salmonella infection causes pregnant women to experience indigestion characterized by diarrhea and vomiting.

Make sure during pregnancy, you only eat well-cooked eggs.

3. Fish that contain mercury

It is undeniable that fish has many benefits for pregnant women. However, some fish contain a lot of mercury, which can negatively impact pregnancy.

Tuna, mackerel, swordfish, and shark are examples of fish that are not recommended during pregnancy. This is because a large amount of mercury in these fish can interfere with the development of the fetal nerve.

In addition, pregnant women also need to limit their consumption of salmon and mackerel to avoid exposure to pollutants dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

If pregnant women want to eat sea fish, it should not exceed two moderate servings per week.

4. Milk without pasteurization

Milk is a source of various nutrients needed during pregnancy. However, during pregnancy, you should not consume milk produced without pasteurization.

Without pasteurization, milk has a higher risk of containing Listeria bacteria which can cause infection during pregnancy. This also applies to dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt.

5. Raw vegetables

Some sprouts, including sprouts from green beans and clover leaves, are not recommended for raw consumption.

This is due to bacteria in sprouts that are really difficult to clean even after already gone through the washing process. Therefore fully cooked are important.

This prohibition applies to everyone, but pregnant women must be more aware of consuming raw vegetables to prevent bacterial infections.

In addition to some of the above foods, pregnant women should also avoid other types of food, such as liver and sushi containing raw fish and drinks containing caffeine or alcohol.
