Pregnant women often complain about the appearance of their skin during pregnancy time. Believe it or not, many pregnant women lose their self-esteem due to this skin problem.

Four Skin Problems That Often Occur During Pregnancy

Various things can cause skin problems during pregnancy, ranging from weight gain, decreased immune system, and changes in hormone levels and blood circulation.

The following are some skin problems that often occur during pregnancy:

1. Black spots

One of the most famous skin problems during pregnancy is the appearance of black spots on several parts of the skin, such as the forehead, cheeks, nose, neck, and over the lips.

During pregnancy, the appearance of black spots is usually caused by hormonal changes that trigger melanocytes to produce melanin (a skin pigment).

To reduce the black spots, pregnant women are advised to follow the below tips:
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Reduce outdoor activities during the day.
  • Always use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 (during the day).
  • Always wear a hat or umbrella to protect your skin from sunlight exposure.

2. Acne (pregnancy pimples)

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause the oil glands to produce more sebum. Due to this condition, the risk of acne appearing will increase.

If, before the pregnancy, you already have acne, your acne can worsen during pregnancy. Try the below steps to reduce the risk of acne during pregnancy.
  • Avoid heavy makeup and fragrance facial wash.
  • Clean your face twice a day using the mild facial wash
  • Use water-based moisturizers (oil-free or non-comedogenic)
Do not use drugs to treat acne without doctor supervision because some acne medications are not safe for pregnant women.

3. Stretch marks

Stretching the skin as the abdomen grows bigger triggers the emergence of stretch marks in pregnant women.

Actually, the skin has an elasticity that can adapt to changes. However,  during the pregnancy, sudden weight gain and the size of the fetus will force the skin to stretch to exceed the maximum limit, and stretch marks will appear on pregnant women's skin.

Usually, stretch marks appear on the abdomen, breasts, thighs, and buttocks.

To prevent the stretch marks problem, pregnant women can apply almond oil on the belly or other body parts prone to stretch marks regularly.

Besides applying almond oil, a light exercise routine will surprisingly reduce the stretch mark.

4. Varicose veins

Pregnant women risk developing varicose veins because their bodies adjust to supply blood to the fetus.

Varicose veins are marked by bluish streaks on the legs and feet. In addition, varicose veins are prone to make pregnant women feel uncomfortable and sometimes cause pain.

Varicose veins can reduce by doing the following tips:
  • Routine to moderate exercise during pregnancy. Regular exercise will help blood circulation become smoother.
  • Limit salt intake.
  • Consume enough vitamin C during pregnancy to keep blood vessels remain elastic and healthy.
  • When lying down, try to put the foot higher than the heart to increase blood circulation.
  • Avoid excessive weight gain.
  • Don't sit or stand for too long.

Closing

However, skin problem doesn't always interfere during pregnancy. There are also skin changes known as pregnancy glow, which is pregnant women look more attractive and beautiful.

Although the exact cause is unknown, pregnancy glow is believed to occur due to increased blood volume and the production of several hormones during pregnancy.

This makes the skin of pregnant women look brighter, supple, smoother, and more radiant.

Some skin problems described above often occur during pregnancy time. But do not worry. These problems will disappear by themselves after the baby's birth.

However, if you feel very disturbed by your skin problems during pregnancy, you may consult your doctor to get safe treatment.
